Count, Group and Compare with Your Baby
1. Shapes
While walking around the house with your baby, talk about shapes you might see. Point out the round clock. Point out the square block or the oval bathtub. Every time you transition from one place to another talk about the shapes you see.
2. Matching
For an infant, when dressing the baby, show them socks that match and socks that don’t. When dressing other articles of clothing, talk about if they match together or not.
3. Adding and Subtracting
Fill up and dump out. For example, use a container to scoop and dump water in the bathtub. Use words like “in, out, full, empty, add, take away” as you are filling up the cup with water and gently pouring it out onto the baby.
4. Songs are Patterns!
Sing songs to your baby with numbers in the songs. Use your fingers to represent the monkeys.
3 Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree
“Three little monkeys swinging in the tree
teasing Mr. Alligator can’t catch me….can’t catch me
along came Mr. Alligator quiet as can be
and snapped that monkey out that tree
Two little monkeys swinging in the tree
teasing Mr. Alligator can’t catch me….can’t catch me
along came Mr. Alligator quiet as can be
and snapped that monkey out that tree
One little monkeys swinging in the tree
teasing Mr. Alligator can’t catch me….can’t catch me
along came Mr. Alligator quiet as can be
and snapped that monkey out that tree
No more monkeys swinging in the tree!”
